| What are the benefits of Basingstoke Get Active to Basingstoke? |
The purpose of establishing a ‘Get Active’ group, formerly known as the Sports and Physical Activity Alliance Group (SPAA for short) in Basingstoke and Deane is to provide a simplified, joined up approach for the delivery of sport and active recreation across the borough. The government has set a national target to increase the number of people taking part in sport and active recreation in England by 1% annually. To achieve this target and other local priorities there is a need for relevant partners to work more closely together, sharing effort and resources, to increase levels of participation. The national Active People survey identified that currently 26% of people in Basingstoke and Deane take part in the recommended 5 x 30 minutes of active recreation per week. Although this places Basingstoke and Deane in the top quartile for participation across Hampshire it is still well below the 70% national target. |
